BORY CASTLE

TELESZKY ISTVÁNNÉ’S FUNERARY MONUMENT (1911)

The work stands in Plot 17 of Kerepesi Cemetery, and was made by Bory Jenő in 1911 in memory of Teleszky Istvánné (1848–1909). The composition depicts a slender female figure, half-covered by a shroud, in relief; the veiled figure is an Art Nouveau symbol of mourning and transience.

The relief is in marble (56 × 167 cm), while the architectural section is in limestone and rises to 335 cm, with classical, harmonious proportions. The funerary monument was probably commissioned by Teleszky János, the deceased woman’s son, who himself rests here beside his mother.

Teleszky János (1868–1939) was an important public figure: Minister of Finance, bank president, state secretary, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a defining figure in Hungary’s financial life. His father, Teleszky István (1836–1899), was a legal scholar and politician, and one of the authors of the legislation governing inheritance law. He too rests in Hosszú Cemetery, in another plot.

The funerary monument has protected status and is officially recorded as the burial place of Teleszky János. Here Bory created something outstanding not only as a sculptor, but also as a maker of memorials; the work remains one of the cemetery’s most refined and intimate works.
