BORY CASTLE

VILLANYTELEP WAR MEMORIAL (1946)

Among Bory Jenő’s lesser-known yet significant works in Székesfehérvár is the relief-like wall sculpture commemorating employees of the former power station. The memorial can now be seen at the E.ON electricity supplier’s site, on the wall of the former power-station office building.

The one-and-a-half-times-life-size statue, originally carved in stone, depicts a worker. It is now painted in a colour almost identical to that of the façade; the paint has worn away in places on the shoulder, revealing the original stone surface. Closely linked to the wall, the sculpture and its architectural setting form a unified memorial.

The work was erected in memory of power-station employees who lost their lives while on duty during the 105-day siege of Székesfehérvár in the Second World War. According to the inscription, workers of the city utilities raised the memorial to six fallen colleagues: József Almádi, József Jeskó, György Kiss, József Mohai, József Szakács and János Ürögi.

Its particular feature is that it depicts neither a soldier nor an allegorical hero, but a representative of everyday working life. With this choice Bory Jenő commemorated the steadfastness of the home front and the sacrifice of people working to maintain public services. The monumental worker figure symbolises duty, the dignity of work and sacrifice in service of the community.

A small model of the work may also be seen in the collection of Bory-vár in Székesfehérvár.
