BORY CASTLE

FOUNDER OF THE HOUSE OF ÁRPÁD

The statue entitled Founder of the House of Árpád is a work by Bory Jenő that commemorates one of the most important figures in Hungarian history, Grand Prince Árpád.

The work depicts not only the leader of the Conquest, but also emphasises his role as founder of a dynasty: it presents Árpád together with his two sons, alluding to the continuity of the House of Árpád and the birth of Hungarian statehood. The composition is therefore not merely a portrait of a historical personage, but a symbolic expression of an entire ruling house and of our national origins.

The concrete statue was placed in the historical arcade of the Hundred-Column Courtyard at Bory-vár, where outstanding figures from the Hungarian past appear as part of a unified artistic programme. The figure of Árpád conveys calm and strength, while the child figures beside him symbolise the future and succession. Through this treatment, Bory emphasises that the Conquest was not merely a historical event, but the beginning of a long-term historical process.

The intellectual message of the statue is also deeply rooted in the world of Hungarian origin legends and historical traditions. As a member of the Turul lineage, Árpád appears in tradition as a descendant of Attila, king of the Huns, under whose leadership the Hungarians took possession of the Carpathian Basin in 895. Bory Jenő condenses this legacy into a single composition: the work evokes both the heroic age of the Conquest and the foundations of the statehood that grew from it.
