BORY CASTLE

SZALAY LÁSZLÓ (1930)

Bory Jenő’s bust of Szalay László was made for the National Memorial Hall in Dóm tér, Szeged. The work commemorates one of the defining figures of Hungarian historiography, legal scholarship and political thought, who is regarded as one of the founders of modern Hungarian historical studies.

The statue was made in 1930 and placed in the eastern arcade of Dóm tér in Szeged. In the same year, Bory Jenő also created portraits of Mihály Horváth and Ferenc Toldy for the pantheon; together with Szalay’s bust, they evoke outstanding figures in Hungarian cultural history.

Szalay László (1813–1864) was a lawyer, historian, liberal politician, publicist and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His life’s work played a defining role in the development of modern Hungarian historical scholarship. As a historian, he was among those who established source-based scholarly historical writing in Hungary, while as a politician he was an important representative of the liberal aspirations of the Reform Era. During his career, he took an active part in public life and in organising scholarly activity. As a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and then as its secretary-general from 1861, he also played a role in developing the institutional framework of Hungarian scholarship. Historical research, legal thought and questions of national development were closely interwoven in his work.

Bory Jenő’s portrait presents the mature scholar. The decisive features, calm bearing and forward-looking gaze emphasise scholarly dedication and intellectual authority. The restrained treatment of the bust is well suited to the solemn atmosphere of the pantheon in Dóm tér. The work commemorates not only Szalay László himself, but also the generation of the Reform Era that shaped the foundations of modern Hungarian scholarship and public life. Bory Jenő’s statue evokes the historian, the scholar and the public figure alike, securing him a worthy place in the pantheon of Hungarian national memory.
