BORY CASTLE

UNIVERSITY BATTALIONS COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL

In 1937, Bory Jenő created the University Battalions commemorative insignia, which was awarded to former members of the voluntary university security units established in 1919. The work consists of two bronze medals mounted on a white marble plaque and was connected with the memorial tablets erected in Budapest in honour of the University Battalions.

The medal on the left bears a portrait of Miklós Horthy, surrounded by the inscription ‘I believe in the resurrection of Hungary’. The medal on the right commemorates the service of the University Battalions. The owner’s name appears at its centre, while below are shields symbolising the University of Sciences and the University of Technology, with the date 1919 between them.

Former battalion members received the commemorative insignia at a ceremony held on 20 March 1937. Each piece was individually inscribed with its recipient’s name, and every surviving example is therefore also a personal historical relic. Relatively few survive today, making them sought-after objects among collectors and local historians alike.

Of particular interest, research indicates that in addition to the commemorative insignia, a large bronze medal version measuring approximately 217 mm in diameter was also produced, although its present whereabouts are unknown.
