The central figure in the artists’ gallery at Bory Castle is the sculpture of Munkácsy Mihály, which not only preserves the memory of the world-renowned painter but also expresses Bory Jenő’s personal homage to one of his greatest role models.
The sculpture of Munkácsy by Bory Jenő occupies a special place in the artists’ gallery at Bory Castle. Although it is a full-length depiction rather than a conventional portrait bust, it nevertheless stands in a prominent position among the portraits of artists. Its placement itself indicates that Bory Jenő regarded Munkácsy Mihály as one of the greatest figures of Hungarian painting, whose work he viewed with profound respect and admiration.
The sculpture evokes not only Munkácsy’s outward appearance, but also conveys his creative personality, intellectual authority and artistic greatness. Through the solemn bearing, resolute modelling and richly detailed execution, Bory represented him as an artist who created enduring value through knowledge and talent. The sculpture radiates dignity, inner strength and creative vocation at once.
For Bory Jenő, Munkácsy Mihály embodied the type of artist who won international renown for Hungarian art through talent and diligence. Munkácsy’s life, from former carpenter’s apprentice to painter recognised throughout Europe, was a particularly inspiring example for later generations of Hungarian artists. Bory also regarded as important in his own career the perseverance and creative power that had made Munkácsy’s successes possible.
The sculpture is organically integrated into the spirit of Bory Castle. Bory Jenő created the entire complex in a spirit of reverence for Hungarian history, culture and art; for this reason, the gallery also accommodates figures whom he regarded as defining personalities of Hungarian culture. Among them, Munkácsy Mihály occupies an outstanding place.
The sculpture of Munkácsy is therefore not merely the portrait of a celebrated painter, but a tribute to one of the greatest masters of Hungarian art. It also demonstrates the special role Munkácsy Mihály played among Bory Jenő’s artistic exemplars, for he considered Munkácsy’s oeuvre an enduring value of national culture. The sculpture was restored in 2022.
